AKHA approves N350.1bn supplementary budget for 2024

…seeks intervention for dilapidated primary school in Abak 

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, on Thursday, approved a supplementary budget of N350.1 billion for the year 2024. 
This followed the adoption of a report of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, presented by its Chairman, Hon. Itorobong Etim.
The approved Supplementary Budget now includes an increased Recurrent Expenditure of N8,922,513,000, compared to the initially approved allocation of N359,065,431,810, resulting in a total of N350,142,918,810.
The revised budget now includes an increased Capital Expenditure of N82,414,029,890, up from the originally approved N490,905,328,180, bringing the total to N573,319,358,070.
After reviewing the report of the Committee of Supply, the House approved a supplementary budget of N923,462,276,880, with November 28, 2024 as the commencement date.
Also at plenary, the House approved the adjustments to the Approved 2024-2026-2025-2027 Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) as recommended by the Committee on Economic Planning and Development.
Meanwhile, the House has intervened to restore the deteriorated classroom blocks at Government Primary School, Midim Waterside, in Abak local government area.
Rt. Hon. Mfon Idung, the Member representing Etim Ekpo/Ika State Constituency, in his motion, expressed concern over the poor state of the school’s infrastructure, highlighting issues such as leaking roofs, cracked walls, broken windows, and damaged furniture affecting both the students’ learning environment and the teachers’ morale.
Idung emphasized the safety risks posed by the deteriorating structures, particularly during rainfall, and called for immediate attention to prevent any potential collapse.
He also appealed to Governor Umo Eno to prioritize the renovation of the school  as part of the state’s education transformation efforts.
In his response, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, directed the Assembly Clerk, Mrs. NsikakAbasi Orok, to officially request Governor Umo Eno to expedite the renovation of the Primary School.
