CITN, Governor Eno eulogize Okon at Uyo tax retreat

President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Mr Samuel Agbeluyi, and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, on Thursday, last week, showered accolades upon Mr Okon Okon, the Chairman of Akwa Ibom Internal Revenue Service (AKIRS).

Their praise for Mr Okon was evident during the opening of the 2024 Council Retreat and 179th Meeting of the CITN Governing Council, held in Uyo.

Under the theme ‘Making CITN the Professional Institute of Choice: Strategies and Options,’ Mr Agbeluyi and Governor Eno, represented by the Commissioner for Economic Development, Sir Emem Bob, commended Mr Okon for his outstanding performance as the board Chairman of AKIRS.

“We are proud of the positive outcomes of the institutional repositioning as reflected in the steady growth in our internally generated revenue, tax prayers data base, improved efficiency in the collection system, and compliance by taxpayers.

“I acknowledge the performance of Mr Okon, he has done creditably well. It is on record that ever since he took over as Chairman of the Revenue Service, the internally generated revenue of Akwa Ibom State has been looking northward. Thank you CITN for giving us such a wonderful and performing Chairman”, the governor said.

Mr. Agbeluyi, who described the AKIRS Chairman as the pride of Akwa Ibom State, further emphasized that Mr. Okon was esteemed not only in CITN but also within the Joint Tax Board (JTB) and beyond the state.

The governor, in his remark, called on CITN to join forces with the Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service (AKIRS) to enhance the capacity development of AKIRS revenue officers and intensify tax sensitization and awareness campaigns throughout the state.

To facilitate ease of doing business, the governor said his administration established a committee to review and harmonize state taxes, eliminating multiple taxation to boost internally generated revenue while easing the burden on taxpayers.
