
Keeping Akwa Ibom clean: AKSEPWMA, Ministry seek synergy
The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Frank Archibong, recieved in audience, Chairman and board members of Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency, chaired by Mr. Prince Ikim, at his office in Uyo on Monday, January 18, 2021.
Setting the tone, Chairman of the board, Prince Ikim, intimated the Commissioner of his plans to tour the 31 LGAs across the State for the purpose of ensuring the sustainability of the State as the cleanest State in the country
According to the Press Unit, Office of the Commissioner Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Ikim solicited stronger synergy with Local Government and Chieftaincy boss, intimated of his Agency’s decision to partner with the 31local government chairmen for the setting up of sanitation Court in each of the LGAs, monitor and implement on Environmental laws, and to carry out awareness/sensitization campaign in the various LGAs to ensure Akwa Ibom which is currently ranked as the cleanest State in the country maintains her status.
Responding, the Commissioner, commended the Chairman of AKSEPWMA and members of the board for living up to expectation. He suggested that those LGAs in the Urban areas should be given prominence, adding that for Akwa Ibom to be kept clean, it requires all hands to be on deck.
Some of the LGAs listed for deeper concentration by the Commissioner include; Ibesikpo, Ibiono Ibom, Eket, Abak, Essien Udim, Oron, Itu and Oruk Anam, Ikot Ekpene among others.
Mr. Archibong, who gladly subscribed to the request, assured of supporting the tour. He further charged the Waste Management Board to also direct their focus on overgrown grasses and littered debris, stressing that cleanliness is the basic in fighting Covid-19 Pandemic and maintaining a healthy society.
Those who attended the synergy meeting include, Secretary, State Council of Chiefs, Mr. Emmanuel Umontuen, Mr Edet Etukudo, Director of Administration at the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mrs Ime Akpan, Mr. Victor Henry, Hon.Friday Udoka, chief of staff to the Commissioner, Mr. Tommy Enodien and Mr Essien Okon Essien.
