The Ekiti State Police Command has debunked reports that African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore was kidnapped by armed thugs in Ado-Ekiti.
The Command said Sowore was involved in an altercation with some individuals at a restaurant around the Dalimore area of the state capital, prompting a distress call to the police.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abutu Sunday, said operatives swiftly responded to the report and rescued the politician.
The police disclosed that Sowore sustained a minor injury and was receiving medical attention at the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti.
“The Command wishes to categorically clarify that Mr Sowore was not kidnapped,” the statement said.
It added that the Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, had ordered a discreet investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those involved.
The police said anyone found culpable would be brought to justice.
The Command urged members of the public to disregard reports of an alleged kidnapping and avoid circulating unverified information capable of causing panic and tension.
The clarification followed social media reports alleging that Sowore had been abducted by armed men and that his whereabouts were unknown.
