Two soldiers killed as troops foil ISWAP attack in Borno

The Nigerian Army says two soldiers were killed while repelling an attack from ISWAP terrorists on a military base at Magumeri in Borno state on Thursday.

In a statement, Sani Uba, media information officer, headquarters Joint Task Force (north-east) Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), said the terrorists attempted to infiltrate the location under poor visibility and recorded minor breaches on an isolated section of the camp.

“Impressively, troops fought gallantly and decisively contained and defeated the attack by neutralising scores of the terrorists,” Uba said.

“It is important to state that further exploitation of the general area revealed extensive blood trails, body drags and the recovery of terrorist corpses confirming the heavy casualties inflicted on the attackers during the failed assault.

“Troops also recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition from the fleeing terrorists to include PKT automatic anti-aircraft guns, AK 47 rifles and magazines.”

Uba said one officer and other personnel were injured but are now stable and receiving medical attention.

He said some equipment and temporary buildings were destroyed by fire during the intense battle.

Uba added that troops are still carrying out operations in the area to strengthen the success recorded from the encounter, while efforts continue to assess the full extent of the damage.

“The failed attack further underscores the fighting spirit of OPHK troops in denying terrorists freedom of action across the Theatre of OPHK,” Uba said.

“The Military High Command commends troops for their impressive battle performance, urging them to sustain the operational tempo”.
