The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has called on the State Secondary Education Board (SSEB) to assign teachers for core subjects such as English language, agricultural science, government, geography, civic education, and economics to public secondary schools facing shortages in the state.
The Assembly has also mandated its Committee on Education with ensuring compliance to rectify this issue.
This resolution came after a motion was presented by Hon. (Mrs.) Precious Selong, representing the Urue Offong/Oruko State Constituency, during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Mrs. Selong expressed her concerns regarding the critical shortage of teaching staff in essential subjects within public secondary schools, highlighting that many schools with significant student populations urgently require qualified teachers in these areas.
Describing the situation as “ugly,” Selong noted that the lack of teachers has severely hindered the learning process and negatively impacted students preparing for their Junior and Senior School Certificate Examinations.
She warned that if not addressed promptly, the issue could jeopardise the ambitious goals outlined in the rural development and educational advancement components of Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda.
The motion, which was seconded by Hon. Uwemedimo Asuquo (Uyo state constituency), received strong support from lawmakers, when it was open for debate by Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Udeme Otong.
Following the discussion, Speaker Otong announced the resolutions and directed the House Committee on Education to take appropriate action.
In the meantime, a bill to establishing the Akwa Ibom State Sports Development Fund passed its first reading during the plenary.
Sponsored by Rt. Hon. Effiong Johnson and co-sponsored by others, the bill was referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges for further scheduling.
The House has adjourned its plenary session until Thursday, June 26, 2025.
