The Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), on Saturday, presented an Award of Excellence to Chief Tony Ukpong, acknowledging him as one of Nigeria’s unsung champions of democracy and a prominent figure in journalism.
Chief Ukpong received the award during the 2025 World Press Freedom Day celebration at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo. This year’s event centered around the theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”
Though long overdue, the recognition was described as most deserving, considering Chief Ukpong’s remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s democratic struggle and the development of journalism both within Akwa Ibom State an nationally.
Chief Ukpong, widely known as the only ‘Chartered Journalist’ in Nigeria and a prolific writer, withstood the oppressive regime of the General Ibrahim Babangida military era. Despite surviving assassination threats, he endured an 11-month incarceration during his tenure as a reporter with The Punch and Vanguard newspapers.
Still actively engaged in journalism, Chief Ukpong, a veteran, regards the profession as his divine calling. With decades of experience, he remains a respected voice and mentor in the industry.
Expressing gratitude, a well-wisher remarked, “I am particularly happy and I thank the Comrade Amos Etuk leadership of the NUJ immensely for this recognition. It is a well-deserved Award of Excellence.”
There was also a passionate appeal to the Akwa Ibom State Government, led by Governor Pastor Umo Eno, to consider immortalizing Chief Tony Ukpong in honour of his legacy and impact.
“Chief Tony Ukpong stands in the ranks of the late Dele Giwa of blessed memory. Immortalizing him would serve as a beacon of hope to young journalists and affirm that there is indeed dignity in labour,” the speaker added.
