Fed Poly Ukana Mass Communication Dept hosts maiden orientation exercise

The Department of Mass Communication, Federal Polytechnic, Ukana, has held its maiden orientation exercise for newly admitted students, marking a significant milestone in formally inducting them into the academic and professional culture of the department.

The orientation programme took place on January 26, 2026, at the News Writing and Editing Studio, Annex Campus of the Polytechnic.

Welcoming the students, the Dean of the School of Communication Arts and Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Dr. Theresa Ifiok Linus, explained that the orientation was designed to introduce students to the philosophy, structure, expectations, and opportunities available within the department.

She noted that the exercise would guide the students as they begin their academic journey and equip them with the right mindset for academic and professional success.

Dr. Linus used the occasion to appreciate the Rector of the Polytechnic, Mrs. Eduma Enobong Essien, for creating a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

She commended the Rector for her commitment to academic excellence and for providing state-of-the-art facilities and modern equipment that support effective teaching, learning, and practical training within the institution.

She further reaffirmed the department’s commitment to quality teaching and hands-on practical training in line with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and industry standards.

She urged the students to take their studies seriously, attend lectures regularly, and strictly adhere to the rules and regulations of the Polytechnic.

Speaking on examination conduct, the Acting Director of Academic Planning warned the students against examination malpractice and other social vices, stressing that Federal Polytechnic, Ukana operates a zero-tolerance policy.

He advised the students to study diligently, noting that any form of examination malpractice would attract severe sanctions, including expulsion.

Also addressing the students, the Acting Director of Communication and Other Related Matters,Dr. Manasseh Umoette, enlightened them on the vast career opportunities and professional certifications available in Mass Communication.

He described the programme as broad and opportunity-driven, with the capacity to produce self-reliant and employable graduates when properly harnessed.

In his words, “I am a living testimony that when you study Mass Communication and master your craft, jobs will look for you.”

He listed the career opportunities available under Mass Communication to include journalism, public relations, advertising, digital media, corporate communications,event management, political communication, brand management among others.

In a vote of thanks, the ND I class representative, Comrade Augustine Ahamba, expressed appreciation to the Polytechnic management and the Department of Mass Communication for organising the orientation.

He also thanked the resource persons for their insightful presentations and assured them that the students would abide by all advice given, obey institutional rules, and remain committed to academic excellence.

The orientation programme was attended by the Acting Director of Career Services, Comrade Itoro Ekanemsang; Head of Department, Office Technology and Management, Mrs. Idorenyin John; Head of Department, Library and Information Science, Dr. Kolawole Daniel Toriste; ASUP Secretary, Mr. Prince Ademola; as well as staff of the Department of Mass Communication.
