In a significant move to improve youth welfare, Governor Umo Eno has announced the extension of the N20,000 monthly allowance for NYSC members serving in the state to all corps members from Akwa Ibom who are serving in various states across Nigeria.

The decision, which was part of the resolutions of the State Executive Council meeting presided by Governor Umo Eno, on Monday, is part of the Renewed Hope – ARISE Youth Support Initiative, and aims to alleviate living costs and enhance the well-being of corps members.

Mr. Aniekan Umanah, the State Commissioner for Information, stated in the excerpts from the meeting published on the government’s Facebook page that the allowance would be reviewed periodically based on current circumstances.

Global INSIGHT reports that Governor Eno, last week, announced that corps members serving in Akwa Ibom would now receive N20,000 monthly allowance from the state government, in addition to the federal government’s allowance. Previously, the Akwa Ibom government provided only N5,000 to corps members.

Governor Eno emphasised that this increase is designed to complement the federal government’s N77,000 monthly allowance, assisting corps members in meeting their essential needs.

In addition to the allowance increase, the governor has also approved the reconstruction of the NYSC Orientation Camp at Ikot Itie Udung in Nsit Atai Local Government Area, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare of corps members in the state.

With this latest adjustment, corps members serving in the resource-rich Akwa Ibom will receive a total of N97,000 monthly, surpassing the N80,000 minimum wage for civil servants in the state by N17,000.

During the meeting, yesterday, the State Executive Council also reviewed a memo from the Finance and General Purpose Committee (FGPC) and approved the construction of a 2.15 km dual carriage rigid pavement and the rehabilitation of a 0.8 km dual carriage flexible pavement at Itam Industrial Park in Itu Local Government Area.

Umanah stated: “Following the presentation of the State’s investment portfolio, Council constituted a Committee to engage with the management of key investment, including Rafia City Hotels (Four Points by Sheraton), with a view to strengthening mutually beneficial business relationships. The Committee was given 30 days to submit its report.

“The Committee was further mandated to design and propose a sustainable and efficient management framework for the Ibom Hotels and Apartments brand across Nigeria, including the establishment of a functional and well-composed Board to oversee its operations.

“To improve security and preserve the aesthetics of the Ewet Housing Estate, Council directed all legitimate allottees of undeveloped plots and abandoned units to commence development within 90 days or risk revocation. The Ministry of Housing and the Akwa Ibom State Property and Investment Company (APICO) were mandated to ensure compliance.

“The Executive Council received a progress briefing on preparations for the forthcoming Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival and directed the Planning Committee to fast-track all arrangements to ensure a timely and successful hosting of the event, which is aimed at discovering and nurturing the sporting talents of Akwa Ibom youths.

“EXCO also reviewed updates on the International Hospital project and directed the Ministries of Health and Justice to finalise all outstanding legal and administrative processes to ensure the timely commencement of the project.

“At the close of the meeting, the Executive Council, led by His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, proceeded on an unscheduled inspection tour of projects within the Central Business District of Uyo. The sites visited included the 5,000-capacity Convention Centre, the Ibom Hotels and the emerging ARISE Shopping City”
