NSCDC partners with Federal University, Ikot Abasi, for campus security strategy

The Akwa Ibom State Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has assured the Vice Chancellor and management of the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi, of NSCDC’s commitment to help implement a comprehensive security system in the temporal and permanent campuses of the university to make it safe for learning for students and staff.
This was the focus of discussion when the Head of PGC department paid an operational visit to the university in Ikot Abasi and had a robust interaction with the VC and principal officers of the institution.
Deputy Commandant, Emmanuel Peters, and his team made an appraisal of the security structure in the institution which is provided by a licensed private guard company and made submissions to the management of the university. Amongst others, DC Peters emphasised the need for capacity training for guards, the deployment of technology, use of security layers for systems checks, and armed guards to provide operational support especially for the water bodies contiguous to the university.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Leo Daniel, appreciated the security outlay presented by NSCDC to ensure that the school functions peacefully without security breaches. He went ahead to give a brief on the university as a specialized university and added that as a new university, it is in its second year of operation, thus; the university has only 100 and 200 level students.
He pledged to engage the Corps in the areas mentioned to ensure that the university is safe for teaching and learning.
The Registrar, Mrs Offiongita E Nkang, and the Chief Security Officer of the University, Mr Uwem Umosen, also made valuable contributions towards creating a conducive environment for learning. The CSO supported the submissions made by the Corps and expressed optimism that if the strategies are fully implemented, the potential threat from the creeks and river that borders the institution will be doused.
Also present were the Bursar and University Librarian.
DC Peters presented the NSCDC Acts 2003 and 2007 to the Vice Chancellor to apprise him and his team with NSCDC’s core mandate of protecting critical infrastructures and regulating PGC operations.
