Akwa Ibom State Government is set to commence implementation of the new N80,000 minimum wage for verified workers in its employ beginning from the January 2025 salaries, with arrears effective from November 2024

The State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, announced this while speaking at the 2025 Thanksgiving Service of the State Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) at Ikot Ekpene Udo, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, urging workers to ignore speculations about the payment.

Eno was reacting to a letter from organized labour, which threatened to shut down the state’s workforce over rumors that the government would not pay the new minimum wage this month.

The letter, titled “Urgent Concern Regarding Non-Payment of the New Minimum Wage in Akwa Ibom State,” expressed growing concerns over rumors that the January payments might not materialize.

Addressing the situation, Governor Eno clarified: “We are committed to paying the ₦80,000 minimum wage as promised. However, verification is necessary. I understand the verification report will be presented to me tomorrow by the Head of Service.

“For those verified, payments will commence this January, covering arrears from November 1. There is no need for anyone to pressure us or claim credit for this decision—it is our commitment.

“However, if you have not been verified as part of the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service, you will not be paid, regardless of strike threats. We are focused on keeping our promises, and no one should mislead you otherwise.”

Governor Eno emphasized his administration’s pact with Akwa Ibom workers, reaffirming his commitment to their welfare as a priority. He added that the letter from organized labor was unnecessary, given his administration’s prior assurances.

“The letter being circulated has not reached me, nor do I know anything about it. Rumors are the lowest form of knowledge. Please, do not take our simplicity for granted or insult our intelligence. We are already doing what we committed to, and it does not require any external pressure,” Eno stated.

The Governor further appealed to stakeholders to encourage leaders rather than resort to destructive criticism, emphasizing that encouragement enhances performance.

Governor Eno commended media practitioners for promoting government policies and programs, acknowledging their vital role in shaping public perception. He urged collaboration to reshape narratives and emphasized the need for unity and support.

“To the NUJ, I assure you that I will fulfill my promise to complete the Union’s Secretariat,” Eno stated, appreciating their efforts in promoting the ARISE Agenda of his administration.

Governor Eno also recounted a personal anecdote, recalling how a six-year-old girl once predicted he would become governor. He expressed regret over some pastors claiming credit for his emergence and warning of his administration’s failure due to a lack of recognition.

“Some pastors believe I owe them, and they have written to me, claiming they will pray for my government to fail because I have not appreciated them. This is amusing, but I intend to meet with them soon,” he said.

Earlier, the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk, expressed gratitude to God for the grace upon the Union and its leadership. He commended Governor Eno for being the first sitting governor in a decade to attend an NUJ event in person, including the Thanksgiving Service.

Hosting the event in the governor’s hometown was the Union’s way of honoring him, Etuk said, adding, “Journalists in the state will continue to promote the ARISE Agenda of your administration.”
