AKS NUJ Election: Four aspirants cleared for State Chairmanship, three compete for Vice Chair

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has approved four candidates to contest for the State Chairmanship position ahead of the State Council election on August 2. The candidates are Nsibiet John, Esther Effiong, Nene Affia, and Effiong Edet Okon.
Additionally, three aspirants—Margaret Moore, Ernest Udo Robert, and Mkpoikana Enoh—have been approved to run for the position of State Vice Chairman. Margaret Moore is seeking a second term.
Comrade Nsibiet John, a veteran journalist with nearly 20 years of experience, serves as the Publisher/Editor of The Ink, a prominent local newspaper in Akwa Ibom State. He is also the immediate past Chairman of the Federated Chapel of the Union.


Esther Effiong and Effiong Edet Okon, also known as Sly De Monk, have both previously held the position of Chairman of the State Information Chapel of the NUJ.
Nene Affia, formerly known as Nene Albert, is a former Vice Chairman of the Union, having served alongside Elder Patrick Albert, who was State Chairman from 2013 to 2019. Comrade Affia currently works as an Assistant Director in the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Information.


For the office of State Secretary, two candidates, Nsikak Esenowo and Michael Ufot, have been cleared to run.
Additionally, four candidates: Uduak Akai, Udeme Hosea, Kufre Emmanuel, and Dianime Uko have been approved to contest unopposed for the positions of Assistant Secretary, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, and Auditor, respectively.
A statement jointly signed by Gabriel Ekaidem, Chairman of the Credentials Committee, and Unyime Akpan, Secretary, on Tuesday, announced that the NUJ Triennial Conference and Elections in Akwa Ibom State are set to take place on August 2, 2025.
The statement also indicated that official campaigning for the candidates will commence on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, and conclude at midnight on July 30, 2025, in accordance with the previously approved election timetable.
