Annang monarchs excommunicate Pat Ibanga Akpabio over verbal attacks on Senate President, wife

The apex traditional council of the Annang ethnic nationality, Afe Nkuku Annang, has excommunicated Mrs. Patience Ibanga Akpabio over what it described as her persistent verbal attacks and insults against the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, his wife, and members of the Greater Akpabio family.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, the Royal Fathers declared that Mrs. Patience had “no genuine cause” for her continuous invectives and had, by her actions, shown disrespect to her husband’s family and the traditional leadership of Annang Land.

According to a communique jointly signed by leading monarchs HRM Akwa Akuku Comos Akpan, President of Afe Nkuku Annang and Paramount Ruler of Essien Udim; HRM (Prof.) Amanam Akpanudo, Vice President and Paramount Ruler of Etim Ekpo; and HRM (Engr.) J. J. Obosi, Secretary General and Paramount Ruler of Oruk Anam, the council had initially invited Mrs. Patience Akpabio to appear before it within seven days after observing her continuous verbal attacks on the Senate President and his wife via social media.

The council noted that after the expiration of the seven days, the invitation was extended by an additional three days, but Mrs. Pat failed to respond, instead, she allegedly escalated her attacks to include the entire Akpabio family.

Following her failure to appear, the Royal Fathers resolved that Mrs. Pat Ibanga Akpabio had “no genuine cause for her continuous insults and invectives,” stressing that her actions contradict the values of decency, respect, and dignity for which the Annang nation is known.

“Afe Nkuku Annang has taken a decision to stand by the position of the Greater Akpabio family that Mrs. Patience Ibanga Akpabio is no longer a recognized wife of the family. By extension, she ceases to be a recognized wife in Annang Land.”

In what the council described as a disciplinary measure to preserve traditional decorum and respect, Mrs.Pat was declared “a taboo and a source of curse,” with a stern warning that no Annang person should invite her to any social or traditional event within Annang Land, as doing so would be at their own peril.

Other signatories to the resolution include HRM Akuku Saviour Sylvester Udofia, Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Traditional Rulers Council and Paramount Ruler of Abak; HRM (Dr.) Uwa Umoh Adiaka III, Paramount Ruler of Obot Akara; HRM Edidem Joseph Okosi Ekot III, Paramount Ruler of Ika; HRM Akuku Okon Udo Unit, Paramount Ruler of Ikot Ekpene; and HRM (Engr.) Amos Daniel Akpan, Paramount Ruler of Ukanafun.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to upholding discipline, unity, and respect for constituted traditional authority, stressing that the dignity of the Annang nation must be pre

served at all times.
