Christmas: Rector spreads holiday joy to cleaners, security guards at Federal Polytechnic Ukana

In a rare and deeply touching show of love, the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ukana, Mrs. Eduma Essien, has reached out to the cleaners and security men of the institution, widely regarded as the lowest rung on the polytechnic ladder, but whom she described as its silent strength.
The visit, which took place in the spirit of the Yuletide, was aimed at honouring workers who often labour behind the scenes with little recognition. Despite being seen by many as casual staff, the Rector said the cleaners and security personnel are the true fulcrum of the polytechnic, stressing that without their daily sacrifices, the institution cannot function optimally.
To share in their Christmas joy, Mrs. Essien presented ten bags of rice to the workers and gifted all female cleaners with wrappers. The simple but thoughtful gesture brought smiles, laughter, and renewed hope to the faces of the beneficiaries.
Addressing the workers, the Rector encouraged them to remain faithful and dedicated to their duties, assuring them that their efforts are seen and valued. She reassured them that better days lie ahead and that their patience and commitment will not be in vain.
Mrs. Essien also disclosed that advocacy for proper staffing of cleaners and security personnel in federal institutions, instead of engaging them through contractors, is already at an advanced stage and receiving attention from relevant authorities.
She further pledged to continue working towards improving the welfare of all staff, regardless of their status or position. “I am here to celebrate Christmas with you,” she said. “The little I have brought is from my heart. I wish you the very best of this season.”
Overwhelmed with joy, the cleaners and security men described the gesture as the first of its kind in the history of the polytechnic. They offered prayers and blessings for the Rector, asking God to grant her wisdom, strength, and success as she leads the institution.
