NUJ holds lying-in-state for former Akwa Ibom chairman, Etop Williams

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, has held a solemn lying-in-state in honour of the second elected chairman of the Council, Comrade Etop Williams, who passed on at the age of 75.
Late Comrade Williams, who served as Chairman of the Council between 1991 and 1992, was celebrated for his remarkable contributions to the growth and development of the Union in Akwa Ibom State.
The late media veteran was credited with securing the Union’s first plot of land in Uyo, a landmark achievement that laid the foundation for the development of the Council’s permanent secretariat.
He was also remembered for organizing the first-ever Press Week of the Council, an initiative that has evolved into the biggest annual event of the Union in the state.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, paid glowing tribute to the deceased, praising him for his visionary leadership, achievements, and enduring legacies within the Union.
According to the Council Chairman, Comrade Williams blazed the trail for successive administrations and remained a shining example of dedication and commitment to the journalism profession.
John further announced that the Union would immortalize the late former leader and honour him posthumously during the 2026 Press Week celebration.
On behalf of past chairmen of the Union, Comrade Ikpong Essienudom described the deceased as a great leader whose tenure witnessed peace, unity, and development in the Council.
He noted that the Late Williams prioritized the welfare of members and worked tirelessly to strengthen the Union during his time in office.
Responding on behalf of the family, the deceased’s son, Nsikak Etop Williams, expressed appreciation to the Union for the honour accorded their late father.
He thanked members of the Council for standing by the family during the period of mourning, noting that the gesture would remain unforgettable to the family.
