NIPR endorses UNIUYO workshop on social media, free speech

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has officially endorsed the upcoming University of Uyo Media and Public Relations Workshop, describing it as timely and essential for promoting responsible digital engagement among students.

The endorsement was made by the State Chairman of NIPR, Dr. Manasseh Umoette, and his executives during a meeting with student leaders at the Image House in Uyo on April 30, 2026.

The workshop, themed “Social Media, Free Speech, and the University Image: Finding the Balance in the Digital Age,” is scheduled to hold on May 14, 2026, at the Barth Ebong Annex Campus of the University of Uyo. It is powered by the institution’s Student Union Government (SUG).

In his remarks, the NIPR chairman commended the initiative, emphasizing that social media and free speech must be exercised with responsibility, especially within academic communities where reputation is vital.

He noted that students, as internal publics, play a central role in shaping how the university is perceived by the outside world.

In his words , “The idea of free speech is commendable, but it must be guided by a conscious effort to strike a balance, your actions and inactions on social media can either build or damage the image of your institution. A positive university image attracts goodwill, partnerships, and interventions from bodies like TETFund and philanthropists.”

He further stressed that in today’s digital age, the influence of social media can not be underestimated, as it has become a powerful tool for narrative building. According to him, while free speech remains a fundamental right, its misuse can have far-reaching consequences on institutional credibility and opportunities.

Earlier, the SUG Director of Information and Public Relations, Comr. Godwin Patrick gave an in-depth explanation of the rationale behind the workshop theme. He said the choice was driven by the increasing need for students to understand the fine line between expressing opinions online and safeguarding the reputation of their institution.

Patrick noted that with the rise of digital platforms, students now serve as both content creators and brand ambassadors of the university, often without realizing it. He stressed that the workshop aims to equip participants with practical knowledge on ethical communication, digital responsibility, and strategic image management.

“Social media has given everyone a voice, but not everyone understands the weight of that voice,” he explained. “

Also speaking, Student Union Media Aide, Comr. Inemesit Udofia appreciated the chairman for granting the audience and expressed optimism about his presence at the event. He поted that having the NIPR chairman physically attend the workshop would provide students with direct access to industry insights and professional guidance.

In a vote of thanks, the NIPR Akwa Ibom State Chapter Treasurer, Mrs. Edidiong Inyang lauded the leadership of UniUyo Student Union for coming up with the initiative and praised the relevance of the theme. She described it as a step in the right direction toward ensuring that young people utilize social media platforms constructively.
