2026 WCQ: Super Eagles’ World Cup quest diminished after 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe
Nigeria’s quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup faced a significant setback as they settled for a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The Super Eagles had previously reignited their campaign with a 2-0 win over Rwanda last Friday. However, in their match against the Warriors on Tuesday, Eric Chelle’s squad appeared lackluster and squandered numerous scoring opportunities despite creating several chances.
Victor Osimhen eventually put Nigeria ahead in the 73rd minute, heading home after fine combination play between Tolu Arokodare and Ola Aina.
But the visitors stunned the home supporters with a last-minute equaliser in the 90th minute.
Tawanda Chirewa ran through the Eagles’ defence unchallenged before slotting the ball past Stanley Nwabali.
The result leaves Nigeria in fourth place with seven points, one behind Benin Republic and Lesotho.
South Africa currently top Group C with 13 points.
