Assemblies of God Seminary holds 42nd convocation, awards degrees to graduates across various programmes

By Nsikak Akwa

Uyo, Nigeria — The Assemblies of God Theological Seminary (AGTS), on Friday, November 7, 2025, held its 42nd Convocation at the Seminary Cathedral at 32 Aka Itiam Road.

The ceremony honoured graduates from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 cohorts, featuring Bachelor of Arts degrees in Bible and Theology, Christian Education, and Missions, along with Diploma qualifications in Bible and Theology.

In a brief interview prior to the ceremony, the AGTS President, Prof. Williams Mbamalu, praised the seminary as one of West Africa’s premier institutions. He highlighted the faculty’s expertise in languages such as Hebrew and Greek, emphasising the seminary’s dedication to training professionals and gospel preachers.

Prof. Mbamalu further noted that although the seminary is owned by the Assemblies of God Church, it maintains a welcoming and inclusive environment for Christians from various denominations.

During his address, Prof. Mbamalu expressed gratitude to the diverse districts of the church for their ongoing monthly support and reassured district superintendents that the institution is focused on empowering graduates to contribute to ministry through both material and spiritual development, rather than fostering political divisions.

In his convocation message titled “The Four Pillars of the Word of Faith — and the Cracks Beneath Them”, Ambassador (Dr.) Daniel Isimoya cautioned that some prosperity-driven messages may inadvertently elevate human will above divine guidance, prioritising material comfort over spiritual growth.

Isimoya pointed out that while church attendance may be high, essential teachings often remain underrepresented.

Additionally, Rev. Orok Nkebem (PhD), who delivered his exhortation based on 2 Timothy 4:5, urged graduates to endure persecution while preaching the truth. He encouraged them to focus on the Word rather than being swayed by sentiments, psychology, politics, or nepotism, and to remain steadfast in their calling.

The event also recognised Ipia Glory Ipia-ogbu (AGTS/EXTDIP/0107/2024) as the overall top student, graduating with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.85.

Speaking to reporters during the ceremony, Ipia-ogbu shared her journey of overcoming financial challenges through faith and perseverance and emphasised the importance of discernment and listening to God as keys to success.

Rev. Dr. Godwin Akpabio, a lecturer in the Faculty of Christian Education, commended the seminary’s unique programmes and student achievements, while calling on the government to support the institution through infrastructure development and scholarship opportunities.

Other dignitaries present at the convocation included Rev. Sylvester Uwah, PhD, Pro-Chancellor of Wellspring University and Convocation Guest Speaker; Rev. John Asuquo, Director of Education for Assemblies of God, Nigeria; Rev. Asuquo Edet, Uyo District Superintendent; Rev. (Dr.) Ezekiel Waribo, Calabar South Superintendent and former Dean of Students’ Affairs; Rev. (Dr.) Ime Ukpong, Board of Administration member; along with other faculty and administrative leaders.
