Rector calls for laws to protect statistics profession in Nigeria

Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ukana, Mrs. Eduma Essien, has asked the government to create strong laws to protect the practice of statistics in Nigeria.
She said the profession is declining because many unqualified people are now working as statisticians.
According to her, only people with the right training and certification should be allowed to practice statistics. She explained that statistics has many branches, which makes it a valuable and marketable profession, and added that statisticians are among the best minds in the world.
Mrs. Essien made this statement while receiving the Head of Department and staff of the Department of Statistics.
Speaking during the visit, the Head of Department, Dr. Joseph Dagogo, said the department came to appreciate the Rector for her outstanding performance in her first year in office. He said her leadership has brought positive changes to the department and the entire institution.
He added that under her leadership, the polytechnic has recorded major academic progress, including the accreditation of more ND and HND programmes, improved infrastructure, and better learning conditions.
The department presented an award of honour to the Rector, who is also a statistician. Dr. Dagogo said the award was to thank her for her support, mentorship, and commitment to the growth of statistics and research in the institution.
Also speaking, the Dean of the School of Applied Science, Dr. Nsikak Essien, praised the Rector for her strong leadership, which he said has transformed the development of the polytechnic.
In his vote of thanks, the Registrar, Mr. Idhigu Lucky, thanked the department for honouring the Rector and encouraged them to continue building the department.
The visit was also attended by the Polytechnic Librarian, Mr. Ehikioya Uduebor, and other staff members.
